There have been multiple cases where contaminated scrap metal was unwillingly recycled into newly manufactured products. Beyond the radiological risks and potential consequences in health and economical losses along the supply chain, this type of event could have repercussions with nuclear safety authorities and possibly the media. The systematic detection of potential contamination in scrap metal therefore became an essential step for the recycling sector, as well as for the third parties processing the materials further down the recycling chain.
